From the Crypt

By Deception

It's Halloween, and the rebuilt Underground Noize is finally live.

This wasn't just a fresh coat of black paint. I've been digging through years of old files, submissions, and forgotten corners of the archive. I wanted to restore the audio, track down sources, and give this place the attention it actually deserves. The last major update landed on Halloween 2025 with 90 audio clips. One year later, the Tape Vault has 114 playable clips across 144 published cases. Every account, upload, and play count from the old site survived the move. All 12,220 plays of them.

Here's what's waiting inside:

The Backmasking Documentary Field Guide: An interactive eight-reel documentary tracing the weird history of reversed sound. It covers everything from Edison-era cylinders and the "mad dog" story in Reel 01, to Satanic Panic courtrooms, congressional hearings, and the viral clips still making the rounds today.

The Tape Vault: Expanded case notes and players that let you listen to the evidence forward and backward for yourself. Explore deliberate studio tricks, disputed claims, and a few of those classic Beatles clips.

The Noize Signal Log: Trackers, synths, sound-mangling tools, demoscene archives, and independent corners of the web worth keeping alive.

The Rebuild: The moving backgrounds and visuals are back from last year, but the code underneath has been tweaked and optimized, and the animations that used to misbehave are fixed. A few things still react when you bother them. Go poke the 'Z' in the Noize header.

There is still a stack of material on the workbench. More cases are waiting their turn. If you sent something in years ago, it might finally be crawling out of a folder. New cases are much easier to add on this platform, so if a reversed track catches your ear, send it in.

Start with the Field Guide, pull a tape from the vault, or find something in Noize that makes your speakers regret their career choice.

Headphones on. Candy within reach. Play it backward.

Happy Halloween.
